I don’t have the manual and my grandmother is no longer living. Do old sewing machines even have a reverse setting or should I just do it manually?

It may or may not have reverse, most did. Look on the main part of the machine. My mothers old machine had a “switch” that you pushed down for reverse and left up for forward. It was located on the main body of the machine on the left side just before the thread and needle area. Hope this helps. Do you have a local fabric store that sells sewing machines? Take a picture or the machine itself there and they might be able to help you find the reverse.

If you are talking about back stitch the machine should have a stick like lever that you push down. Mine is in front of the machine, but the older ones might have it on the side.

Just to add, sometimes you have to hold the lever in order for it to backstitch. As soon as you let go of the lever, it goes forward again. A machine that old is probably in dire need of a cleaning anyway, so the cleaning technician would be able to show you if that machine has one.
