How can I get a small number of small things embroidered cheaply?

December 25th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Conan H asked:

I am beginning to design baby gear and would like to add some branding to it. My thought is to get some small fabric tags embroidered with the name of my line and then sew one to each piece.

However, when I’ve looked on line for places that do embroidery, many companies want $4+ an item, which doesn’t make sense when some of the things I’ll be selling go for under $10.

Any ideas on how to get these tags done for 50 cents or less?

Thanks!

There are several online places that do printed labels, for around .50 each. The embroidered ones are going to cost more simply due to the time and set up involved. I’ve added some sources below.

    Good luck!

You are not going to get machine embroidery for under 50 cents. It costs more than that to set it up and sew it out.
Buy an used embroidery machine and start doing it yourself. Or go with a fabric tag and get a custome stamp and stamp your logo on it with a fabric ink pad

These days embroidering is computerized. My advice is to get your own machine. I know that will be very expensive. But, in the long run it would be a lot cheaper to do it yourself than for someone else to do it for you. This is an especially good idea because you plan to make this into a business.

My friend wanted to embroider his hat. They charged him $1 per letter. If he wanted a picture or logo, they charged at least $5, depending on its size.

My point is if you depend on someone else to do your embroidering, you may actually lose money. If you want to maximize your profits, get your own machine.

You can’t, BUT, I have an idea (because I make custom children’s clothing and use this idea myself). Go to your craft store ask for inkjet fabric sheets. Use your computer to “design” your tag for your items and then run your sheets through your computer to print your tags. Cut your tags apart and either use stitch witchery to glue them to your items or just simply tack them into place. You now have your own tags at a fraction of the cost.

I own 2 embroidery machines and have made my own tags but this still works great at a fraction of the cost and time. Have fun and GOOD LUCK with your business venture!! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

You are looking for custom labels.

They start at about 75 cents for twenty.

The more you buy the less they cost.

Best wishes for a successful business.
