Bought 1st embroidery machine. What do I need to download and use designs from the internet?

December 28th, 2009 · 9 Comments

Tami T asked:

Please include any and all options. I have read about “memory cards” ,”cds”, and “flash cards”. I have not got my machine yet…its on the way, so I have no idea what connection capabilities it has. Does it only have a card reader or does it have a USB port or cd slot? What is the best option and how do I transfer the designs I downloaded to my computer to my machine? Thanks for ANY help you can give.
I bought the Brother SE-350

There are many brands and models of embroidery machines. Some of them require a reader and card and then you transfer designs you download to your computer onto the card via the reader. Some can be connected directly to your computer via USB, and then you transfer designs you download to your computer directly to your machine.

Mine uses the reader and card. I can use the design CD’s by transferring the designs from those to my computer, and from there to my card, which I then insert into my embroidery machine.

I got my first embroidery machine a couple years ago and was totally clueless. I joined a wonderful group here:

I found a lot of great information there by reading posts, and then asked a few questions and got prompt reliable answers. I was very impressed by the support the members give to each other, and still post on that board frequently.

There are other embroidery/sewing forums, but that’s by far the best I’ve found. There’s even a section of free embroidery designs, and links to many other available on the internet.

If you do go to SewForum, be sure to let the members there know what brand and model of embroidery machine you have when you ask questions about it. There are thousands of members and you shouldn’t have to wait too long for someone familiar with your machine to come help you.

I have the Brother SE270D machine. If that happens to be the one you’re getting feel free to email me!

Did you buy it from a sewing machine store??? You are going to need lessons. I got free lessons on how to use my machine. Then classes on how to use the embroidery part of it. How to download designs. What thread to use, what stabilizer to use,how to use it. How to hoop. You really need to take some classes.

You need to find designs in your machines language. I have a Viking and need designs in HUS. They are usually in a zip format. You click down load then un zip them into a file.

Hi, I am so happy for you. I love my embroidery machine, I got in 2000. I can help you with information on how to load and download designs, but I need to know which machine you bought. Let me know which one then I can steer you in the right direction.

    Thanks, Deborah

First of all, congrats on your new machine! I have the Janome 350E and the Janome MB-4. You might want to visit the Brother website and look at the specs on your machine. I use both a flash drive and a CF card to transfer designs from my ‘puter to my machine(s), altho with the MB-4 I can hook the computer to the machine and transfer via USB cable.

Depending on what’s handy, I use either the drive or the card, write the designs to the drive or card, then walk it over to the machine itself.

BTW, have you discovered yet? One of the best sources of designs out there! ;-)

Depending on the type of machine you purchased will be what the options are. The best thing I find to use is a flash drive. For this you need a USB port. There are many yahoo! groups and websites that give away free designs so that the purchase of new designs can be minimal.

    Hi Tami,

The pe-350 features 67 built-in stitches, 98 stitch functions, 70 built-in embroidery designs, a push-button automatic thread cutter, effortless bobbin loading and a built-in card slot

It also SHOULD come with an instructional dvd, so you can watch the instructions that are easier to learn then reading for most.

So, first off you will need a transfer box. The transfer box is a way to get designs purchased from the internet onto your machine. (that fits your machine) I use the ped-basic for my machine.

Once you purchase designs on the internet, either via email, or via cd you can transfer those designs onto the card in this box, and then put them onto your machine to stitch out.
This is VERY easy, and takes only a few minutes to do.

You can go online to purchase a variety of boxes, IE: magic box, ped design box, etc.

The machine itself is pretty simple to use, and the design format needed is .pes format. One of the simplest to find, and cheapest to come by. (at least by myself) There are multitudes of yahoo groups to read up on, and learn I reccomend because members are fab.

    Hope this helps

I would strongly recommend going to a sewing machine store to take lessons. I went into Missouri Sewing Machine and spent about an hour there as they walked me through the downloading process over and over again. I then knew what I needed to purchase and how to use it. It is not difficult, but it is difficult to tell someone on line. Good luck. I am having so much fun downloading designs and just creating!

You will need to take lessons from your dealer. This is the best way to learn, especially when you consider what you paid for it, and you don’t want to use the wrong materials (stabilizers, thread, needles etc.). There is a lot involved in machine embroidery so it is best to take advantage of the lessons that should be available free of charge. You will definately need Winzip or Winrar, as most embroidery designs come in a zipped file format. From there is will depend on your machine whether you have to use special software to convert the file into a readable format for your machine. If you need a converter box, this will also be available from your dealer. The same for a USB stick.
